The Temptation of Lila and Ethan

Title: The Temptation of Lila and Ethan

Series: The Secret (Book Three)

AuthorJessica Sorensen

GenreNew Adult Romance

Release Date: October 22. 2013

Synopsis:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Ella and Micha series comes a gripping story of passion, pain, and the courage to love . . .

THE TEMPTATION OF LILA AND ETHAN

On the surface, Lila Summers is flawless: good looks, expensive clothes, and a big, beautiful smile. But a dark past and even darker secrets are threatening to bubble over her perfect façade. She’ll do anything to keep the emptiness inside hidden-which leads her into situations that always end badly. Whenever she hits bottom, there’s only one person who’s there to pull her out: Ethan Gregory.

Ethan set the rules a long time ago: he and Lila are just friends. He doesn’t do relationships. Although his tattooed, bad boy exterior is a far cry from Lila’s pretty princess image, Ethan can’t deny they have a deeper connection than he’s used to. If he’s not careful, he could be in serious danger of becoming attached-and he’s learned the hard way that attachment only leads to heartbreak.

When Lila falls farther than she ever has before, can Ethan continue to help as a friend? Or is he also getting close to falling . . . for her?

My Review:

The pills keep away the memories and feelings of what happened last night, along with many other nights in my past. And not remembering them is important. Pain equals unwanted emotions, meltdowns, embarrassment.

There is no easing into Lila and Ethan’s story; you are thrust directly in the deep end, gasping for air as you struggle to breathe right along with them. I have a list of characters I’ve read over the years who tug at your heart, so broken down by life, every being of your soul aching for them. Lila is almost at the top, only surpassed by one. I will admit that from the beginning I didn’t know where this was going…..

It’s amazing how one moment in life can be beautiful, and then you return home-to reality-and remember that beauty isn’t everything and that the ugly painful part will always exist in the form of  unpaid bills, bad choices, and tiny white pills.

This is the story of Lila and Ethan, the best friends of Ella and Micha from the previous two books. You don’t really NEED to read those first, though you should because they are THAT good! Jessica Sorensen has a way of writing that literally grabs you from the first sentence of the first page. She grabs you by the heartstrings and you cannot breathe until the last page is over. God forbid there be a sequel and you are left with a cliffhanger. Talk about major book hangover!!

I think I may have just fallen in love with him. No one has ever said something so nice to me or put that kind of confidence in my character. In fact, I’ve been told the opposite for as long as I can remember.

Honestly, I have never hated someone’s parents in a book as much as I hate Lila’s. To even call them her parents is doing a major disservice to the word, for they are anything but! These are vile, disgusting people who should have never had kids to begin with, They care only about themselves and keeping up with appearances, though in reality their lives are as far from perfect as you can get. They constantly cut Lila down until she is threadbare, and even when she is lying on the ground they metaphorically kick her some more.  Lila has absolutely NO self confidence and uses sex in an attempt to feel something, anything.

Because what I’m feeling right now, this terrifying, cliff falling, heart dropping, thoughts racing, plunging into unknown was far from anything I ever felt for London.

Enter Ethan. Ethan has his own broken past, for different reasons than Lila. He carries around a lot of guilt and burden on his shoulders and cannot escape his past. He despises large crowds, preferring the solitude and quiet to people. Despite all this, he is the only person Lila can turn to. The attraction between these two, despite how much they try to ignore it, jumps off the page. Like moths to a flame, try as they might, they can only fight their desire for so long. Needless to say when they finally give in, it is pure magic.

Perfect doesn’t exist. Realness does. Realness is when I need. And Ethan is as real as anyone I’ve ever met.

I have never rooted for a couple quite like I did for them. The road isn’t easy. Many bridges need to be crossed. There were definitely many struggles and life affirming changes to be made. A lot of self reflection and hard truths. This was by far a 5 star read for me. I cannot wait to see what Jessica comes out with next!

Fiercely. Forcefully. With heat, desire, and hunger suffocating both of us as we drown in each other’s feelings. Our bodies align and press together as I kiss her with all the pent-up energy I’ve been collecting since the first day we met. I’ve lost all control over my actions. Rules don’t exist. The past and the future dissolve and only this moment exists.

Review & Giveaway : Searching for Tomorrow by Katie Mac

Katie Mac - Searching for Tomorrow

Title: Searching for Tomorrow

Series: Tomorrows, Book One

Author: Kathryn McNeill Crane (Katie Mac)

GenreContemporary Romance

Release Date: October 20. 2013

Synopsis:

Some people are blessed to find that one certain person who completes them.

Wrynn’s yesterdays were what others only dream of having. She and Tripp were the best of friends before they even thought about love. They had the fairy tale life where ‘like’ turns into ‘love’, and ‘love’ becomes ‘happily ever after’.

What happens when life conspires against you, and snatches your soul mate from your arms?

…only her forever love ended much too soon.

Broken beyond her own ability to repair, Wrynn boxes up her grief and attempts to raise her three girls the best she can on her own. As time slowly passes, Wrynn relives her life with Tripp while struggling most days to get out of bed. She is reminded of him at every turn.

How do you set your grief and anguish aside? How do you pick up the shattered pieces, put those pieces back together again, and try to move on?

Wrynn tries to find the joy in life every single day through her daughters, family, and friends. Her twin brother Liam has dedicated himself to helping Wrynn put her life back together after losing his own love. On the other hand, her mother-in-law lives to torment her at every turn. Wrynn can’t even find a chance to breathe, much less a desire to somehow search for her tomorrow.

Excerpt:

“Wrynn.” His whisper broke the silence. That one anguished word brought me to my feet and forward, into his arms. I had no doubt this was where I should be–sheltered, enveloped, protected. Loved.

I felt the flex of his muscles when his arms squeezed me tighter. My face burrowed into his chest as I tried to get closer to the heat pouring from his body. His mouth dipped to my ear as he whispered his love for me, and his promise of forever. He apologized for leaving me when he knew I needed him and told me that he would always be there for me.

I turned my head and sought reassurance that he spoke the truth. His lips met mine. Time stopped, and a fire that I had never before felt burned through me. This was no soft, gentle kiss. This was a kiss filled with hunger and desperation. The need flowed between us as I opened my lips beneath his. Our tongues danced together and as Tripp drew my body closer to his, a deep longing-filled moan drew up from the depths of my being. The world around us disappeared as I cleaved urgently to the man who had claimed my very soul.

This was the kiss that I had always longed for. The kiss that marked me as his. The kiss that spoke to me.

My Review:

A few months ago, in one of my many perusings through Goodreads, I stumbled upon this book. I will full admit that I am a judge a book by its cover kind of gal. If the cover doesn’t attract me, I won’t go any further to read the synopsis, much less the book. Needless to say, this cover immediately grabbed my attention. Having lived in North Carolina my entire life, a quality I have in common with the author, I recognized the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. I’ve seen that view, felt and experienced it, and could sense in my soul that this book would be something magnificent. Something soul shattering, life affirming, and heart wrenchingly beautiful. I had high expectations.

Not only was I NOT disappointed, but it far exceeded every preconceived notion I may have formed.

A fleeting thought in my scattered mind reminds me that this weakness is only temporary. I live each day just trying to cope, wanting to heal. I know this feeling of despair won’t last forever.

What I am about to reveal is NOT a spoiler. You find this information out in the first few pages. It will shape the rest of the book and would be impossible to go any further without discussing it. Searching for Tomorrow is about a widowed  wife of a soldier, a single mother, a sister, and a friend. Barely functioning for the past three years, Wrynn isn’t living; she is merely surviving. This is a romance novel in its finest form, but not in the conventional way you may be used to.

Wrynn and Tripp have been together, be it friends or eventually husband and wife, since they were young kids. We alternate POV’s not between different characters, but different time frames. One part of the story is pre-Tripp’s death and the other is post-Tripp’s death. They are told simultaneously, and if you live books and characters as I do, be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster. When both parts collide, one story ends and another begins. Butterflies, rage, shock, love, devastation, disgust, sympathy, hope. I experienced all of these and more; many at the same time!

“You’ll see babe. This isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s just the beginning. I plan to shed tears with you, but only for the good things.”

There are basically four things allowing Wrynn to exist and trudge on; her three daughters, and her twin brother Liam. Wrynn’s daughters are the only bright spots in her otherwise dimly lit days. She is living in a haze, swallowed up and consumed by her overwhelming grief. Katie Mac writes with a fluidity that forces you to encompass these emotions right along with Wrynn. This isn’t just a story about Wrynn, it is a story about you. Searching for Tomorrow will make you take a long hard look in the mirror and question everything. Am I doing enough good in this world? What if I lost my spouse? How would I go on each day living? What would I do if my kids had to grow up without a father? Could I be doing more? Do I tell close friends and family how much I appreciate them and love them enough?

I looked into the eyes of my future, and knew that tomorrow would only get better from here.

Searching for Tomorrow contains some HEAVY material. Parts won’t be easy to read, especially knowing from the beginning what will happen eventually. I came to the realization when it was all over that even knowing the final outcome doesn’t lessen the journey. If anything, knowing ahead of time what was coming only heightened every experience for me. I zoned in more to little details, treasured each heartwarming moment, for which this book was chock FULL of! The hard truths of this story, however, are very real for many, many families. Having never been through anything remotely close to what these characters go through makes no difference in understanding the depths and range of emotions that they feel.  I was able to sympathize and rejoice along with them on a purely human level. When Wrynn cried, I cried. When she felt joy, I felt it too. And when all hope was lost, I felt despair the likes of which I’ve never experienced before.

As they wrapped tightly around me, one distinct thought passed through my mind. Home. No matter where we were, or where life took us, when I was in his arms, I was home.

The love that Tripp and Wrynn share is so pure. If I had to think of one word to describe it, that would be it. From decisions they make before they are married, to having the girls, to be separated during deployments. Their proposal? Oh, just you wait. Katie describes every detail of that day so well you can literally smell every flower, feel every drop of mist from the falls, and taste each kiss. There is realism in her imagery that comes from someone who has had these experiences, or in the least been to these locations. She allows you to visit the beautiful mountains of North Carolina without ever having to leave your house.  These two LIVE for each other, heart and soul. It is hard to tell where one begins and one ends. This is glaringly evident in every scene they are in, whether it be together or apart.

There is one other important man in Wrynn’s life that I haven’t mentioned yet; her twin brother Liam. While Tripp is the main man in her life in one part of the story, Liam is the man in the other. The relationship between these two will make your heart melt! The protectiveness, the fight, the undying love, the friendship, these two have it all. When Wrynn falls, Liam is there to catch her. He brings a sense of normality to her otherwise chaotic and lifeless existence. There is a delicious side story going on with Liam. While we only see bits and pieces of it, have no fear. There will be a second book for him soon.

When you kiss them goodnight, my lips will touch yours. When you hold them close, my arms will embrace you. The wind in your hair will be my fingers running through it. The warmth of the sun will be my love shining down.

Searching for Tomorrow is a story that everyone should read. No, not should read, NEEDS to read! It would be impossible to pigeonhole this novel into one genre for it spans across many, combining truths known to many. Katie has woven a tale that will touch so many hearts, young and old alike, no matter their road in life. It brings validity to the belief that there is hope to find your everlasting love; no matter how old you are, no matter what life throws at you. Things may happen in your life that at the time bear no rhyme or reason, but hold out hope, because even in your darkest moments, it is still possible to find your happily ever after. I don’t cry too often while reading books, but this one brought me to tears multiple times, both happy and sad. Adjectives haven’t yet been invented that can adequately describe how I feel about it! To give this book 5 stars would be doing it a disservice, for it deserves so much more. I am going to give it 10 stars. My first ever ‘so nice I rated it twice’ book. A truly phenomenal read by debut author Katie Mac, I lovingly anticipate her future releases. Well done ma’am, well done.

It’s hard to search for tomorrow when you are still living for yesterday. Sometimes you have to accept that today is all that is guaranteed.

About the Author:

Katie Mac

If you are reading this, I think you should know that “About me” sounds so very pretentious to me. I guess that is what I am supposed to write about, so here it goes!

Kathryn is a simple country girl who likes to spend time with her hubba, hunka hubby, her three kids and her friends. She loves to cook and really loves to eat! During the spring and summer, you will more than likely find her outside puttering around in her garden. When the veggies start coming in, she will probably be sweating over a hot canner in the kitchen, canning all the goodies she is blessed with. Kathryn likes to hike and go camping, and as a Girl Scout leader, she gets to do this pretty often! On cold winter nights, you will probably find her wrapped in a warm blanket, lost in a good book, while sitting in her rocking chair on the front porch!

Kathryn was born and raised in North Carolina, and while she loves to travel, she can’t imagine ever leaving the mountains that she has come to call home. Not a day goes by that Kathryn doesn’t thank God for abundantly blessing her. He has been so good to her, and she is very grateful. She holds Jeremiah 29:11 very close to her heart and believes it with every fiber of her being. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Kathryn loves flip flops, chocolate, sweet tea and dirt between her toes. As far back as she can remember, she’s had a book in her hand. Reading has carried her to places she will never go. It has introduced her to people that she will never meet. When life is great and when it is rough, she’s always been able to find a book to carry her through. She finally decided to write down some of the stories in her head (yes, be scared) and heart after dawdling around and wasting years dreaming. She hopes you enjoy reading those stories as much as she loves writing them!

Exclusive Excerpt from the Author:

“Get up, birthday girl,” Andrew announces from somewhere near the foot of the bed. I hear him slap the tabletop by the window with the palm of his hand repeatedly.

I roll over onto my side, putting my back toward the bright sun and then burrow underneath the sheets. A gust of cold air hits me when Andrew snatches the sheets off me.

“Oh come on!” I moan, drawing my knees toward my chest and pulling the pillow over my head. “I should be able to sleep in on my birthday.”

Suddenly my body is being dragged off the bed and my arms come up wildly, trying to hold on to the edge of the mattress. Andrew’s hand is wrapped firmly around my ankle. I kick and flail, trying to get away, but he drags me across the bed so fast and without much effort that I just give up. My butt hits the floor and the sheets tumble down and around me.

“You are such an ass!” I laugh.

“But you love me. Now get up.”

With my hair all tangled around my head, I look up at him and pout. He smiles at me and reaches out his hand. I take it, and he pulls me into a stand.

“Happy birthday, babe,” he says and pecks me on the lips.

My Review:

I stared at him, wondering if I should slap him or tell him that every time he spoke I felt like I was on fire.

I have been a HUGE fan of Jenn Foor for a while now! I LOVE anything Mitchell Family related, and devour every single book as soon as they are released. I am invested in each and every character in the series, and long to see where she will take them next. That being said…….this book fell a little flat for me. I wasn’t able to connect with the characters as I usually am with her books. I will try to explain further.

“I’ll fuck you so good that the only car you’ll ever drive will be a Ford, because you’ll never stop thinkin’ about me.”

We start the story with Skylar. Having just found out that her long time boyfriend is a dirty rotten cheating scoundrel, she takes off for a fun weekend at the beach with friends. As luck would have it, her car breaks down and along comes the sexy tow truck driver. Enter Ford. No, not just the truck, the man. The Southern, sweaty, sexy as sin Ford. Sparks fly from the get go between these two, but they are determined that it will just be a fun time and nothing more.

I guess I was just regretting giving myself completely to a guy that didn’t give a damn about even himself.

Honestly the brightest part of this book for me was Ford. Here was a broken man doing his damndest to keep everything together. The only adult in this book that actually takes responsibility for anything, he has dropped out of college to run his alcoholic father’s auto repair shop. Addict Mom is out of the picture in parts unknown, and the entire family is still reeling from the death of his sister, who had also fallen in with a bad crowd. Ford has an excellent head on his shoulders, and underneath his hard exterior is  a heart of gold who really just wants to love and be loved in return.

For someone that wasn’t trying to hurt me, he did a damn good job doing the exact opposite. Being with Ford felt so natural. The way my hands fit into his and how he touched me made me feel like I’d been with him for years. I hated knowing that it was all going to end.

While there was definite chemistry between Ford and Sky, I feel like a lot of the prerequisite circumstances that cause couples problems weren’t necessarily angsty, but actually annoying. Just wait until you meet Ashley, and Shayne, and Ford’s dad, and Ford’s mom, and Ashley’s Dad, and pretty much EVERYONE that wasn’t named Ford.  The next book will star Shayne and Lacey, and I am very interested to see if my opinion of him will change.

4.5 star read for me. I will definitely read it again before the next installment releases, just to get my Ford fix.

College senior, Lottie Boyd, expects to drink too much while on spring break in New Orleans. What she doesn’t expect is to be haunted. Or fall in love. But that’s exactly what happens.

It starts with strange, vivid dreams about a 19th century widow so desperate to save her sick little girl, she’s willing to do anything–even if it involves the black magic of Voodoo. It doesn’t end there. Voices, ghost sightings, familiarity with things and places she couldn’t possibly know. All leading her to the Villere House of Voodoo and the young Creole owner, Xavier Villere.

Xavier is compelled to help and is drawn to Lottie in a way he’s never known, but skepticism of his family’s century-old link to Voodoo and the occult keep her at arms length. If he can only come to terms with his heritage, he might be able to help solve the mystery of the widow plaguing Lottie’s dreams. And maybe even find love in the process.

Excerpt :

This was it. My new beginning. My new ending.
I didn’t know what beheld my fate, but I sucked in a breath and stepped over the threshold.

“Bon soir, esclave.”
My eyes soared up to the first landing of a giant blue velvet staircase. Massive works of art hung like armament on gold gilded walls.
A man in a grey chequered suit, with black shirt, silver tie, and slicked back hair watched me from the landing. His gaze unclothed me, terrified me.
I stepped back, bumping against guard who didn’t let me go any further.

He bent his head and whispered in my ear, his breath tickling my neck. “Say hello to your new master.”

Beautiful Broken (University of Branton #2) by Nazarea Andrews

Nazarea Andrews - Beautiful Broken

Synopsis :

She’s been broken by her past. He’s been breaking for as long as he can remember.
Together, they can make each other whole–or destroy each other.

When his best friend asks for something, Dane rarely says no. But babysitting a newly sober Scout Grimes for three weeks isn’t exactly a normal request. And with their history, it’s a recipe for disaster. Not to mention, she’s drop dead gorgeous and he can’t touch her.

There are few people Scout trusts as much as Dane Guillot. He’s always been her safe place, where nothing can hurt her. He’s also been the only man she’s never let herself want–screwing up their friendship isn’t worth one amazing night together.

They have too much history, and too much personal baggage to ever work. But if they are willing to take a chance on love–it might be worth the risk.

My Review :

I’m still, not even breathing, for what feels like a lifetime. When she nods, it’s like everything falls into place. All the pieces of the puzzle that makes up my life – all of them shift just enough that things fit, and the centerpiece is her.

Whew, and with that, we start off with a bang! Beautiful Broken is an apt title for this book, because they characters are oh so broken, but at the core have such beautiful souls. This story was stocked FULL of angst, heart, longing, forgiveness, acceptance, and honesty. It was simply delicious!

She’s asleep in minutes, and I’m left in the dark, holding her. Wondering how I became her safe place, and wondering how the hell I’m going to keep from screwing it up.

I have never read a couple that inspired such trust in each other, in all of us. Dean and Scout are just…… how to put into words? Look up knight in shining armor, and you will find a picture of Dean Guillot. Here is a man who would literally do ANYTHING for this woman, no matter the cost to his safety or sanity, and has time and time again.  He is the one constant in her life. Her life full of disappointments, feelings of being unworthy, and general turmoil and avoidance. She has been written off by nearly everyone in her life, but Dean is her one true constant.

“You’re safe – you always have been. You keep the nightmares away.”

The pain radiates off Scout in waves. To everyone else it comes off as being self important, and a user, but Dean sees the truth. He sees it in her, and he sees the likeness in himself. These are two peas in a pod, perfectly made for each other, neither willing to relent and give in to the passion, neither believing they are worth it.

I look at her, clean and healthy, a little weight on her, hair adorable and falling in her face. Eyes clear and questioning as she meets my gaze. This is the girl I fell I love with without trying.

Dean fights the inevitable. Atticus has been his best friend and like a brother for as long as he can remember. The Grimes family took him in when his own worthless parents could care less. Dean carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, guilt from what happened to Scout, to not being able to save his mother and sister. Because of this guilt he pushes everything and everyone away. Women are for sex, not feelings. If you don’t let anyone in, they can’t get hurt, and you aren’t responsible for any choices they make. Once those walls start to come down, the swoon really starts!

“You aren’t the only one with issues, Scout. I’ve got my own to deal with – maybe it’s time you quit deciding what I need and accept that you’re what I want.”

These two fight each other at every turn. It is exhausting, exhilarating, and damn good reading! They come to realizations in their own times, usually not at the SAME time. You will want to throw your e-reader, and then grab it, give it a big hug, and apologize. Nazarea has this beautiful way of writing that allows you to BE THERE with the characters. I could hear the music, feel the angst and heartache, rejoice in the love.  I didn’t want for it to end!

I’ve never been held like this – like I am the only thing keeping him from falling completely apart.

What we come to realize, long before Dean or even Scout does, is that she is as much his rock as he is hers. These foundations are what make a strong, lasting relationship. All the elements for success are present, these two hard headed individuals just continue to fight the inevitable.

“Scout. You know what I love about you? I love that you have been through hell and you still fight. You know that you’re broken and you still try. You want to be strong for people even when you don’t realize how strong you are. You’re amazing – I wish I could be as strong as you.”

I ADORED this book and would have happily read a couple hundred/thousand more pages of their story! According to the author, there will be more stories to come, even though this had a clear ending, and I cannot wait. Definite 5 star read for me!!!

“I’m not strong Dane. I’m a mess – a broken, fucked-up mess.” “You’re beautiful broken. I wish I could let you see through my eyes. See how strong you are.”
